Mihingo Lodge is a peaceful and exclusive retreat adjacent to Lake Mburo National Park. It features ten rooms which are built on wooden platforms with stilts, covered by a thatched roof. Suspended under the thatched roof is a spacious and comfortable tent equipped with en-suite bathrooms with stunning views, including hot and cold running water, showers, and flush loos.
Each luxury tented room is nestled on a private piece of the lodge's property, enabling guests to enjoy the tranquil environment in complete seclusion. Placed in varied settings, some rooms are situated in a forest, some with a lake view, and some on rocky outcrops.
The main dining area is a large thatched structure built of rocks, the wood of dead weathered olive trees found on the land, and native grasses. Below the dining area, an infinity swimming pool stretches out from the rocks and seems to disappear into the vast landscape beyond.
From the dining and pool area, guests can enjoy the view of a westward oriented valley and its stunning evening sunsets over Lake Mburo National Park.
Animals gathering in the valley provide guests with fantastic game viewing opportunities or a chance to relax and watch wildlife at water hole below the pool.
Lake Mburo is home to many different animal species, including zebra, eland, and impala, who are not found in most other National Parks in Uganda . Additionally Lake Mburo has big numbers of waterbuck, topi, buffalo, hippo, duiker, bushbuck, klipspringer and if you are lucky you will see oribi, reedbuck, leopard and crocodiles.
Aside from lounging by the pool, enjoying the sounds of nature, or watching nearby wildlife, guests can also avail themselves of the numerous activities offered by Lake Mburo National Park and Mihingo Lodge. Diversions include boat trips on Lake Mburo , savannah walks, game drives in Lake Mburo National Park , and horse back safaris.
In appreciation of its fragile surroundings, Mihingo Lodge is an environmentally friendly accommodation. The buildings are constructed in such a way as to melt into the rocky outcrops and savannah landscape around them. Electricity, hot water, and water pumps are powered by solar energy and there is a natural water catchment system to take advantage of the rains.
Activities to choose from
There are lovely games drives within Lake Mburo National Park with some spectacular views. Probably the best view within the Park is from Kazuma Look-out Point . You are allowed to walk to the top of the hill from where you can see 8 of the 12 lakes surrounding the Park. The best way to get there, from Mihingo Lodge, is the Ruroko track, visiting the lovely Ruroko kopje and then to Kazuma look-out point, returning on the Research track (32km, 3 ½ hour round trip) . Another very good game drive from Mihingo Lodge is the Eland track (29km, 2 ½ hour round trip).
Game walks from Mihingo Lodge
We can arrange Game walks starting at the Lodge with an official UWA Ranger Guide. This walk takes you down the valley that you see from Mihingo past the water hole and to a rocky kopje facing Mihingo. We recommend doing this walk in the morning or afternoon when it is not too hot. The walk takes between 2 and 3 hours. Please let us know long enough in advance to be able to organise the guide. (Charge per person: $15 USD, plus transport if the guide has to come from the Park headquarters).
Boat trip from Mihingo Lodge
Boat trips on Lake Mburo have to be booked in advance. The boatsleave at 8 am, 10 am, 12 am, 2 pm, 4 pm and 5.30 pm and have to be booked in advance. The boat trip takes approximately 2 hours, but if you are the only group on the boat they are quite flexible. You always see Hippo and Crocs and many bird species and with alot of luck you might even see a leopard from the boat. The Park has 2 boats; oneis small and takes a maximum of 8 people, the other is slightly bigger and takes 14 people. (Charge per person: $10 or a minimum of$40 for the boat, payable at the Park Headquarter).
Horse Back Safaris
Mihingo Lodge offers horse back safaris around the Lodge in the valleys towards Lake Kacheera just outside Lake Mburo National Park. We carefully adjust the rides according to the riding skills of each group; for beginners and inexperienced riders we only walk the horses. In fact a walk on a horse is the best way to view game. It is peaceful and relaxing and you get very close to the animals. For advanced riders there are also lovely stretches for trotting and cantering.
Massage at Mihingo Lodge
Full body massages are offered by the lodge, taking approximately 1 hour and costing 50,000 UGX. Proceeds from massages go to our Leopard conservation project so you can feel good in every way!
Night game drives
Mihingo Lodge offers night game drives in our new open Landrover. You will have the chance to see some of the nocturnal animals like hare, jenet cat, white-tailed mongoose, hyena, leopard, bushpig, serval, civit, aardvark or even a porcupine. You will probably be leaving by 9:00 pm after a delicious dinner and you can be out for 2 to 3 hours depending on how keen you are. Lake Mburo is one of the few National Parks in Africa allowing night game drives. (20 US$ per person payable to UWA, and if you use our open Landrover an additional 50 US$ (120,000 UGX) for the vehicle including driver and 10 US$ (25,000 UGX) per person towards our conservation and community efforts for the spot light.)
Observation Hide at the Mihingo Waterhole
We have built a hide about 50 metres from the waterhole hidden away next to a big bush. This gives you the chance to be closer to the animals and just relax in the middle of the wilderness. It is a 15 minute walk to the hide from the main area of the lodge.
(Thick Tailed Gallagos) The location on the lake is idyllic and you can use their dug-out canoes to explore some bird life.
Mihingo Lodge is one of the few places in Africa where you can watch thick-tailed gallagos in their natural environment. These are nocturnal primate species that have become very used to our guests and come to the platform below the bar every evening. You will be able to see between 2 and 7 thick-tailed gallagos interacting with each other.
Mihingo Lodge has a clay tennis court. We provide balls and rackets so you just have to let us know when you want to play. The court is about a 10 minute walk from the Lodge. (5 US$ (10,000 UGX) per person towards the conservation and community projects we support)
